Composition dolls were made from sawdust, cornstarch, paint, and glue. They were very popular because they were very cheap to make and were available in many different designs. Unfortunately, they were very susceptible to cracking and crazing of the "skin". They also yellowed with age, due to the final varnish seal coat used by the manufacturers.
This antique composition doll was severely aged with missing pieces from her body and a badly damaged finish. This is not a complete restoration. The body was repaired only where necessary and re-painted to match the existing parts. We classify this as a "museum restoration", where only those parts that have been damaged are repaired. In our museum restorations, we take great care in preserving the antique look of the doll.
