Vintage Wicker Stroller Restoration - Doll Hospital Case History

Case history of a vintage wicker stroller restoration

Restored vintage wicker stroller by A Timeless Doll Hospital

Whew! Now that one was challenging. The stroller was painted so thick, we could not see through it! The metal was in fairly good shape but the coating was in bad shape and the exposed metal was rusting. The rubber wheels were a total wreck and so badly deteriorated it needed to be completely replaced. The wood handle was okay.

Initially we felt it would be easy to sand blast the 3 thick layers of paint, but unfortunately it would have destroyed the wicker. Sooo... with tooth brush in hand, we carefully and too slowly stripped it all. We then used a paint gun to paint the wicker basket.

The metal parts were more cooperative. We sand blasted the frame and wheels. The frame and wheel hub caps were powder coated black. We loved the metal finish of the spoke wheels so we decided to simply apply a seal coat.

The rubber was a challenge. The original rubber was in no condition to be re-used, so we needed to find something suitable to replace it. We did! Tubing used for electrical wiring on animal fences.

The seat was re-upholstered with a rust brown velvet.

The little restraining chain was a bonus. Brian found it on the sidewalk one day near the end of the project. Go figure: it was meant to be.
